The Shelbourne has been a hotel since 1824 and is an Irish national landmark. Named after William Petty, 2ndEarl of Shelburne and Prime Minister of Great Britain, the Shelbourne quickly becametheplace to stay in Dublin. The hotel fronts historic St. Stephen’s Green and remains to this day one of the most prestigious addresses in the city.
The original Shelbourne hotel was established by hotelier Martin Burke who wanted to attract “genteel” customers with high-quality services and accommodations and a first class address. Burke was successful in securing a 150-year lease for this prestigious location. The original hotel was comprised of three adjoining residences, and it enjoyed immediate success upon opening. Significant renovations were carried out in the mid-1860s and the Shelbourne reopened to great fanfare in 1867. In the early 20th century modern hotel amenities were added such as telephone and elevator. In 1922, the Shelbourne was host to the historic drafting of the Irish Constitution, and this dramatic space is now a meeting room. The hotel expanded further in the mid-20th century with a ballroom and other upgrades. The hotel was full restored in 2005.
Today the Shelbourne, bearing the Renaissance brand, continues its legacy as a premier Dublin destination. It commemorates almost 200 years of hospitality with a museum of its history in the lobby. The Shelbourne also has a special geneology butler to assist you in discovering your own legacy. There are 243 guest rooms with 19 suites. Guest rooms are well appointed with period furnishings, finishes, and accessories.
There are two restaurants: The Saddle Room, specializing in steak and seafood, and No. 27 Bar & Lounge, offering light dining and upscale Irish bar meals. The 27 Bar and Lounge features live Jazz and brunch on Sunday. Cocktails and tea are offered in the Lord Mayor’s Lounge and Horseshoe Bar. There are 12 elegant meeting and event rooms of varying capacities, including the Great Room (ballroom).
